What Does It Cost to Remodel a Kitchen in MidCoast Maine?

Plan on $20,000 to $35,000 for a refresh that keeps the layout, $40,000 to $70,000 for a full mid-range rebuild, and $75,000 to $130,000 once walls and plumbing move. Updated for 2026.
Cabinets and countertops set the floor of your budget. What sends a kitchen past the top of its range is almost always the layout change.
Ken has been remodeling kitchens in this region since 1988, in houses where nothing is plumb and every cabinet gets scribed.
Cost to remodel a kitchen in MidCoast Maine, by scope
| Scope | What the range covers | Estimated range* |
|---|---|---|
| Refresh, same layout | Cabinets, counters, sink, flooring, paint, lighting | $20,000 to $35,000 |
| Full mid-range rebuild | The above plus wiring, some plumbing, new appliances | $40,000 to $70,000 |
| Layout change | Walls moved, plumbing and gas relocated, island added | $75,000 to $130,000 |
*Ranges assume a kitchen of roughly 150 to 200 square feet. Structural work, a failing floor system or a full panel upgrade sit outside them.
What Does a Kitchen-Remodeling Budget Buy?
1. Cabinets. This is a third of most kitchens. Stock is fastest and cheapest, semi-custom lets you solve odd walls, and full custom is a joinery budget rather than a cabinet budget.
2. Countertops. Laminate, butcher block, quartz and stone climb in that order, and the fabricator templates only after the cabinets are set.
3. Whether plumbing moves. Keeping the sink where it is saves thousands. Moving it across the room means opening the floor and rerouting both supply and drain.
4. Electrical. Older houses in this region often cannot support what a modern kitchen asks for. Dedicated circuits, and sometimes a panel with capacity, are a real cost and not an upsell.
5. Appliance fit. Ranges and refrigerators have grown. A 30-inch opening that fit the old unit rarely fits the new one without cabinet changes.
6. Ventilation. A recirculating hood moves grease around the room. Ducting to the outside is the version that works, and ENERGY STAR is a useful reference when you are comparing appliances.
7. The condition of what is behind the walls. Knob-and-tube remnants, cut joists under an old sink and soft subfloor all turn up once the cabinets come out.
Why Do Older Houses Cost More to Remodel?
Very few kitchens in MidCoast Maine sit inside square, plumb, level rooms. Floors slope, walls bow, and corners are not ninety degrees.
Scribing cabinets and filler strips to that reality is skilled time. A crew that ignores it leaves gaps you will look at every morning.
Lead-Safe Kitchen Remodeling in Pre-1978 Homes
Demolition in a house painted before 1978 falls under federal renovation rules for containment and cleanup.
The EPA program page explains the practices. It affects both the schedule and the price on most of the older housing stock around here.
A MidCoast Maine Kitchen Scope Example
A 1960s ranch kitchen, semi-custom cabinets, quartz counters, new flooring and lighting, sink staying put, generally lands at $46,000 to $58,000.
Take a wall out to open that kitchen into the dining room, move the sink under a new window and add an island with power, and you are into the $85,000 to $105,000 conversation.
Where Can You Save on a Kitchen Remodel?
- Keep the plumbing where it is, which is the single largest saving available
- Stock or semi-custom cabinets with good hardware, rather than custom boxes
- Quartz on the working run, butcher block on an island, to split the countertop budget
- Do your own paint and hardware after we are out, if you want a job to take on
Do not economize on the cabinet installation, the electrical, or the hood duct. Those three are what separate a kitchen that works from one that only photographs well.
Which Kitchen Efficiency Upgrades Come First?
If the kitchen sits over an unheated crawlspace or against a cold exterior wall, opening it up is your one cheap chance to insulate.
Efficiency Maine lists current rebates. Doing that work while the walls are open costs a fraction of doing it afterward.
How Long Does a Kitchen Remodel Take?
A refresh runs three to five weeks. A full rebuild runs six to ten, and a layout change with permits and inspections can run twelve.
Cabinet lead times drive the schedule more than the labor does. We order before demolition so the room is not sitting open waiting on a truck.
What do homeowners ask about kitchen costs?
Can I live in the house during the work? You can live in the house during the work, and most people do. Plan a temporary sink and fridge somewhere, because the kitchen itself is out of service for most of the job.
Are cabinet refacings worth it? Cabinet refacings are worth it where the boxes are sound and the layout works, because refacing then saves real money. If the layout is the problem, it buys you nothing.
How far ahead should I book? You should book far enough ahead to order cabinets, which means winter for a spring start. Cabinet lead times are the reason, not our calendar.
Do you handle the permit? We handle the permit where the work requires one. Plumbing, electrical and structural changes usually do.
Will my floor need work? Your floor will often need work. Old kitchen floors carry layers of vinyl and underlayment, and what is under them is not known until it comes up.
How Do You Price the Kitchen You Actually Want?
The gap between $40,000 and $90,000 is almost never the finishes. It is whether the walls and the plumbing stay where they are.
